A manually-transmissible soil-borne virus with slender, threadlike particles causes a disease of winter wheat characterized by light green to yellow, spindle-shaped dashes and short streaks on the younger leaves and mosaic and necrosis on the older leaves in May and June. Infection has been widespread since 1957. Losses of 7-59% occurred in experimental plots; all cvs. of Triticum aestivum and T. durum tested developed symptoms but rye, barley and oats did not.
