Factors influencing pre-emergence mortality in Peas. I. An association between seed exudates and the incidence of pre-emergence mortality in wrinkle-seeded Peas

A significant negative correlation was found between the amount of carbohydrates and electrolytes in the exudate and the number of viable seeds, and a positive correlation between the amount of exudate and the predisposition of viable seed to pre-emergence mortality. Samples containing a large proportion of seed that exuded electrolytes and carbohydrates into water showed poor emergence. Pythium spp. were isolated from ungerminated seeds.
