For 54 days 19 German Black Pied heifers of average initial weight 261 kg were fed individually on 1 kg coarsely ground oats, 2 kg meadow hay and sugar beet leaf silage to appetite, or on 2 kg dried beet slices, 1 kg each of coarsely ground barley and meadow hay, silage to appetite and different amounts of soya bean oilmeal, on average 0.6 kg, according to silage eaten, to ensure adequate intakes of starch equivalent (SE) and digestible protein.
