Feathers as a substrate for Histoplasma capsulatum in its filamentous phase of growth

Feathers as a substrate for Histoplasma capsulatum in its filamentous phase of growth

Sabouraudia 4(1): 1-2

Tubes containing 10 ml. sterile tap water and autoclaved feathers from chickens or untreated ones from germ-free quail were inoculated with 70 strs. of H. capsulatum and kept at room temp. All strs. remained viable for the whole test period (>15 months in 1 expt.). Growth, sometimes abundant, was always attached to the feathers, and many previously sterile strs. developed typical microconidia and macroconidia, although they usually became sterile again on subculture on to Sabouraud's dextrose agar. It is suggested that feathers merit investigation as a substrate for preservation of stock collections.
