Genetic and environmental factors affecting birth weight and weaning weight of beef calves

The preweaning records of 525 calves of the Japanese breed were analysed to evaluate the influence of sex, season of birth and age of dam on birth weight and 180-day weaning weight. Two methods of adjustment for sex were compared. The sex x age of dam and sex x season of birth interactions were not significant. Birth weight increased with age of dam until 6-9 yr of age and then declined. Weaning weight increased with age of dam until 6-7 yr and then declined.
