Genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity of roots in two cultivated species of jute. (Corchorus olitorius L. and C. capsularis L.)

Under waterlogged conditions, only C. capsularis varieties produced many spongy and fibrous roots but the number of lateral roots with secondary growth was reduced to a minimum. C. olitorius varieties produced many lateral fibrous and spongy roots only under drought conditions. Within each species variation in root character was under genotypic control, with lateral root number being more strongly heritable than root weight.
