Human responses to experimental infection with influenza A/Equi 2 virus

A strain of influenza A/Equi 2 virus virulent for horses was administered to human volunteers. Approximately 2/3 of the humans were infected, but illness occurred infrequently. In about half of those infected, the A/Equi 2 virus evoked increases in titers of antibody to influenza A2 strains, as well as to the homologous virus. Although some relationship between A/Equi 2 and A2 antigens exists, pre-existing A2 antibody conferred no measurable protection from infection with influenza A/Equi 2 virus.
