Incorporation of acetate-1-14C into liver cholesterol of rats subjected to prolonged exercise

Rats, 13, exercised by swimming for 1 h daily for 168 days and 10 control rats got a pelleted diet containing about 45 mg cholesterol per 100g. The exercised rats had in liver less cholesterol, 211.7 +or-8.6, than the control rats, 240.2+or-6.4 mg per 100 g. There were no differences in contents of esterified fatty acid or phospholipid or in bodyweight. When acetate-1-14C was injected intraperitoneally after 18 h of fasting and 24 h from the last exercise the uptake of 14C by liver in 1 h was greater for cholesterol and less for total fatty acids, excluding those of phospholipid, than in control rats.
