Increase in phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity in bean leaves infected with tobacco necrosis virus

Phaseolus bean leaves were inoculated with tobacco necrosis virus and the effects were determined on phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity and the contents of protein and total phenolics in the infected leaves. There was an 8- to 10-fold increase in PAL activity when necrotic lesions appeared, and a further marked increase in activity accompanying the development of yellow areas between the necrotic lesions.
