Increased rate of tolbutamide metabolism in alcoholic patients

Increased rate of tolbutamide metabolism in alcoholic patients

JAMA 207(2): 363-365

In hospital 18 male and 2 female alcoholics 18 to 58 years old with normal liver function were compared with 6 men and 4 women 24 to 60 years old who were hospital attendants or patients with unrelated disease. After a time interval sufficient for alcohol to be cleared from the body, the subjects were given breakfast, then 1 g tolbutamide was injected by vein and venous blood samples were taken for the estimation of tolbutamide at intervals during 6 h.
