Influence of selenium and linoleic acid on the development of nutritional muscular dystrophy in beef calves, lambs and rabbits

Influence of selenium and linoleic acid on the development of nutritional muscular dystrophy in beef calves, lambs and rabbits

Canad. J. Animal Sci, 50: 137-146

A study was made of the effects of linoleic acid and Se on the development of myopathy in beef calves, lambs and rabbits given hay with low Se content. When ewes were given 14 mg or their nursing lambs were given 7 mg Se per week by mouth there was a reduction in the incidence of dystrophy in the lambs. The protective effect of Se was not inhibited by 1 % of a mixture of linoleic acid 81.0, oleic acid 12-7, palmitic acid 5.3 and stearic acid 1% given to ewes or lambs.
