Influence of some physical and host factors on the behavior of the Sitka Spruce weevil, Pissodes sitchensis, in southwestern Washington

Influence of some physical and host factors on the behavior of the Sitka Spruce weevil, Pissodes sitchensis, in southwestern Washington

Ann. Ent. Soc. Amer, 64: 2, 467-71

Field studies in a 20-year-old Picea sitchensis plantation near Cathlamet, Wash., showed that Pissodes sitchensis oviposits on 1-year-old and older stems, but never on new leading shoots or on lateral branches of any age. The faster-growing trees were the most severely attacked. Egg-laying began at ca. 75 degrees F and reached a peak at ca. 90 degrees. Although the weevils preferred high temperatures for mating and ovipositing, they avoided direct sunlight.
