Influence of temperature and harvest management on growth, level of carbohydrates in the roots, and survival of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)

Data were obtained monthly during 1961-2 from field plots of Moapa (no summer dormancy) and Lahontan (intermediate dormancy) cut at (a) the bud stage, (b) l/10th flowering, (c) full flowering. The highest total yields of herbage were obtained from (b). Yields per plot were correlated more frequently with root content of total available carbohydrates (TAC), followed by plant height, than any of 4 other plant characteristics. Values for TAC were highest for treatment (c) and lowest for (a).
