Influence of temperature on mild mottle and veinbanding in Fragaria vesca and Fragaria virginiana

Phytopathology 55(8): 919-922

ISSN/ISBN: 0031-949X

Mild mottle was masked in Fragaria vesca at 26 C, and the most pronounced symptoms were at 16C. Fragaria virginiana remained symptomless when inocu-lated with mild mottle virus and kept at 16, 21, or 26 C. Veinbanding virus induced a cyclic appearance and disappearance of symptoms in F. vesca. This was similar in all temperatures, and was independent of the nutrient level of the growing medium of the plants. When F. virginiana was inoculated with veinbanding virus it produced most severe symptoms at 26C, but at 16C the plants remained without characteristic symptoms. Mild mottle virus did not influence the development of veinbanding symptoms in F. virginiana at any temperature tested. However, at each temperature studied when F. vesca was inooulated with both veinbanding and mild mottle viruses, only mild mottle symptoms developed.
