Normal saline solution was used to replace 40% of the blood volume of dogs, which had their spleen removed, and Ca in serum was estimated in venous blood samples collected at intervals for 5 h. The experiment was repeated for a second group of dogs with collection of lymph from a thoracic duct cannula during the 5 h. Ca in serum fell sharply in both groups and slowly returned to normal in the first group but not in dogs with thoracic duct lymph drainage.
