From fertilizer trials in maize in 1961-5 in which NPK and f.y.m. was applied at various levels and at various times, it was concluded that the optimum ratio of NPK for grain production was 1: 0.6: 1 and that on soils with a higher pH, fertilizers were better applied in autumn than in spring; spring application was advantageous only in years with above-average rainfall.
