Maize nutrition. 1. Nitrogen and phosphorus content of maize leaves in relation to fertilizer treatment and grain yield

Maize nutrition. 1. Nitrogen and phosphorus content of maize leaves in relation to fertilizer treatment and grain yield

Agrochemophysica 2(3): 53-59

In a field trial during 2 years at Tabamhlope, Natal, maize SA 60 was given all combinations of 70-238 kg N, 47 or 93 kg P, 44-176 kg K, 3.2 or 6.4 t dolomitic lime and 0 or 78.5 kg trace elements (B, Cu, Zn and Mo)/ha. Increase in applied N increased leaf N content linearly, but did not increase grain yield. Leaf P content was low by USA standards; increase in applied P, K and lime markedly increased grain yield and leaf P content.
