Conditions of milking hygiene and their effect on udder health of a total of 3003 cows were studied on 17 farms using hand milking, 11 using machine milking and 4 using both. Under unsatisfactory conditions of hand milking hygiene which prevailed on 14 farms, 7.3% of cows had clinical mastitis and 45.2% had sub-clinical mastitis; corresponding figures for 9 farms where conditions of machine milking were unsatisfactory were 3.9 and 26.9%.
