Methods of breeding wheat for quality, and the effects of the environment at the breeding location and selection based on specific gravity. I. Yield and agronomic characters

Hokkaido Nogyo Shikenjo Iho/Res. Bull. Hokkaido agric. Exp. Sta, 91, 1-13

The hard red spring wheat Rio Negro was introduced from Brazil because of its resistance to Puccinia graminis and to all races of P. triticina in Japan. It was crossed with the susceptible varieties Norin 29 and Norin 75. The F2 population was divided into two parts by mass selection using specific-gravity solutions. Four populations were grown at Sapporo and Kitami from the F3 to the F6 generation and the same treatment was carried out as in the F2.
