12 to 16-wk-old female C3H mice received subcutaneous transplants of mammary tumour tissue and were sacrificed either 30 or 45 days later. Normal mammary glands from C3Hf mice were taken at the same periods. Microscopy (x 1800 magnification) revealed that malignant cells of 30-day-old tumours contained a more random distribution of Golgi apparatus compared to the perinuclear distribution in normal tissue cells. AgNO3 staining demonstrated vitamin C as fine dark brown granules of different sizes with a perinuclear distribution in the cytoplasm of normal cells. Most tumour cells had a similar topographical distribution of vitamin C, although in some cells the granules were more random; the number of granules was increased. Thus, changes in the Golgi apparatus and vitamin C seem to occur in parallel.
