Rice seedlings at the 6-, 6.3-, 6.5-, 6.7-and 7-leaf stages were used to investigate changes in interfoliar and intercellular (lysigenous) air spaces during 1 plastochrone. Change in air-space volume during 1 plastochrone was high in the upper half of the plant and negligible at the lower. In an examination of changes in the air spaces of seedlings at the 3-, 6- and 9-leaf stages, the volume of interfoliar air spaces did not vary, but intercellular air spaces increased during growth.
