Twelve species were used. Crosses were made in all combinations of n = 10 x n = 12 species. Amphidiploids (n = 22) were obtained by colchicine treatment of the hybrids. C. lanatus (n = 22) was crossed with diploid species. Further crosses were made involving interspecific hybrids, artificial amphidiploids and the parental species; some back crosses were also studied.
