On the basis of morphology and chromosome pairing in interspecific hybrids it is shown that none of the n - 10 chromosome species investigated was the ancestor of C. lanatus (n= 22) and that both its parents had yellow flowers. On the basis of morphology and chromosome number it is proposed that C. lanatus ssp. creticus and ssp. turkestanicus be elevated to specific rank, becoming C. creticus and C. turkestanicus respectively. They can be distinguished from C. lanatus, which has yellow anthers and pollen, by their purple anthers and white pollen.
