New investigations into stem rot of Azalea indica and its control

In studies of Rhododendron spp. typical symptoms were induced when young plants of R. concinnum were grown in potting soil inoculated with Phytophthora cinnamomi and Cylindrocarpon radicicola. Very severe losses occurred when planting was 2- to 6-cm. deeper than normal in wet and cold (5-8 degrees C.) soil. At a normal soil temperature (12-15 degrees) the planting depth had little effect on the severity of infection. Nutrition also influenced the degree to which plants succumbed.
