In pot experiments, reduced light intensity was associated with decrease in yield and increase in NO3content in both grasses. Under sufficient light intensity (100% or 75% of incident light) yields tended to be higher at high N level than at low N level, 'but with insufficient light (50 and 25% of incident light) the reverse was true. NO3 accumulation in plants indicated that the rate of N assimilation lagged behind the rate of N uptake.
