In the experiment described the effects of N: K2O ratios were not clearly defined since leaching of the fertilizer salts occurred. There were, however, strong indications that a ratio of 1: 1, or higher in favour of K2O, may be best. The use of plastic mulches was not so beneficial as expected, especially with the higher rates of fertilizers. Evidence of salt injury only occurred soon after seeding in 3 plots and therefore was not considered a factor in this experiment.
