Nutritive value of horse gram (Dolichos biflorus). 1. Effect of feeding raw and treated seed-flour on the growth of rats

Nutritive value of horse gram (Dolichos biflorus). 1. Effect of feeding raw and treated seed-flour on the growth of rats

J. Nutrition Dietetics, India. 6: 329-335

Of weanling male albino rats fed on a complete diet containing raw horse gram providing 10% protein, half died in a 3-week feeding trial; the rest of the rats lost weight. Supplementation of raw horse gram with the limiting amino acids did not improve the nutritive value of the diet. Horse gram autoclaved for 30 min at 121 degrees C promoted fairly good growth in rats. The protein efficiency ratio (PER) of the proteins in a 3-week feeding trial was 1.28.
