Abstract
Experiments were carried out with F1 hybrids from crosses of maize with teosinte and their back crosses to maize. A total of 19 hybrid and back-cross combinations were treated with colchicine. The F1 hybrids showed greater seedling mortality and a greater number of chimaeras than the back crosses. Only half of the total number of chimerical plants set tetraploid seed.
