During one season, a study of panicle grain weight and grain and chaff number was made in two japonica and eight indica varieties. The contribution of the grain weight of the middle portion of the panicle towards yield was more than the grain weight in other panicle portions in the indica varieties. The differences in grain weight in the different parts of the panicle were not marked in the japonica varieties.
