Parthenogenetic reproduction by Dermacentor variabilis (Acarina: Ixodidae)

Parthenogenetic reproduction by Dermacentor variabilis (Acarina: Ixodidae)

Annals of the Entomological Society of America 64(6): 1286-1289

The following is virtually the authors' abstract. Females of Dermacentor variabilis (Say) that fed on a bovine in Texas in the absence of males engorged detached and produced larvae parthenogenetically. These engorged virgin females weighed significantly less than mated females and laid significantly smaller egg-masses. The time required for engorgement by mated females was significantly shorter than the time required by unmated females.
