Plasma parathyroid hormone concentration in hypocalcemic parturient cows

Plasma parathyroid hormone concentration in hypocalcemic parturient cows

Plasma parathyroid hormone and Ca conc, were determined in 324 samples collected during 23 studies on 21 cows in the period before, during and after parturition. In seven studies, apparently normal cows developed only mild hypocalcaemia at parturition; in six, the cows developed severe hypocalcaemia without paresis; and in ten, the cows developed paresis and severe hypocalcaemia (typical milk fever). The mean lowest Ca conc, for these groups was 7.85, 5.59 and 4.24 mg/100 ml, respectively. Parathyroid hormone conc, was inversely related to Ca conc., and the slope of the graph of these two concentrations was used as an index of the parathyroid response to hypocalcaemia in each cow. The mean slope for the hypocalcaemic-paretic cows was not significantly higher than that of normal cows, so a deficient parathyroid response is unlikely to be an essential or dominant factor in the development of severe hypocalcaemia. However, the significantly greater variance in response of the hypocalcaemic-nonparetic cows suggested that compensatory parathyroid responses to hypocalcaemia may sometimes occur.
