Pneumonia in gnotobiotic pigs produced by simultaneous inoculation of a swine adenovirus and mycoplasma hyopneumoniae

The two agents produced severe pneumonia, of greater severity than either agent alone. Macroscopic lesions consisted of bilateral consolidation in the apical, cardiac, anterior portion of diphragmatic and intermediate lobes. Microscopic lesions were characterized as an exudative bronchopneumonia in combination with interstitial pneumonia. Intranuclear inclusion bodies were demonstrated in the proliferating septal cells. Virus and mycoplasma were re-isolated from the pigs.
