Preparation and evaluation of antigens for use in the serologic diagnosis of hyman hydatid disease. II. Isolation and characterization from extracts of cysts of Echinococcus multilocularis of serologically reactive elements found in hydatid fluid of Echinococcus granulosus

Using the techniques described in a previous paper extracts of cysts of Echinococcus multilocularis were analysed by immunodiffusion methods for the presence of reactive antigens similar to those found in sheep hydatid fluid. On double diffusion slides with E. multilocularis cysts (Emc) antigen and homologous antisera, 9 lines were produced; 2 were considered to be of parasitic origin (P2 and P3a). These 2 lines were common to both E. granulosus and E. multilocularis. Fractionation of Emc antigen through Sephadex G-50M and then with serial cycling through Sephadex G-200M produced a fraction M200A which contained most of the serologically (haemagglutinin) reactive material but was not "pure". This antigen when used for diagnoses gave 100% positive reactions with known infections but also gave a small degree of cross reaction to other infectious diseases.
