Studies in stands planted in 1937 and 1949 showed that Birch impairs the growth of the Pine, root competition occurring earlier than crown competition. Wherever natural regeneration by Birch exists or is likely, Birch should not be deliberately introduced into plantations. Thinnings should aim at creating a group structure with a predominance of Pine.
