Rat coronavirus (RVC: a prevalent, naturally occurring pneumotropic vims of rats

Rat coronavirus (RVC: a prevalent, naturally occurring pneumotropic vims of rats

Arch. ges. Virusforsch 31: 293-302

A new virus isolated from the lungs of rats, is prevalent in colony-reared and wild rats, and induces a fatal pneumonitis in new-born rats. The virus, designated rat coronavirus, exhibits properties representative of the coronavirus group: characteristic surface structure, particles somewhat variable in size averaging approx. 90 m mu , apparent RNA content, essential lipid, heat sensitivity, and a close sero-logical relationship with the mouse hepatitis virus complex. The virus grows well in primary rat kidney cell cultures, exhibits a pathpgnomonic cytopathic effect, and produces a c.f. antigen which is sensitive for detection of antibody and useful in epidemic-logical studies.
