Relation of bitter pit to mineral nutrition of apples. II. Effects of nitrogen supplies and foliar calcium sprays on the incidence of bitter pit

Rails trees were grown in water culture under the following conditions: (1) highN; (2) high N+Ca sprays; (3) low N; and (4) low N+Ca sprays. The Ca spray (0.5% calcium chloride) was applied to the foliage 7 times from May to July in each of 2 years. The incidence of bitter pit was more severe on high-N than on low-N trees, and was greatest on trees receiving high N supplies and no Ca sprays.
