Release of prolactin in rats by exteroceptive stimulation: sensory stimuli involved

Sensory cues emanating from pups of Sprague-Dawley-Rolfsmeyer rats were blocked either singly or in combination on day 14 post partum; the dams were placed near to the pups for 30 min (with no physical contact) and were then killed. Only the olfactory stimulus from the pups, either alone or in combination with the other senses, resulted in a significant reduction in pituitary prolactin concn. in the dam compared to control values (from non-exposed dams).
