The following is virtually the authors' abstract of this first part of a series of which the second has already been noticed . When extracts from the kernels, silks and leaves of selected lines of maize were tested in Georgia to determine the response of larvae of Heliothis zea (Boddie) and Spodoptera 'frugiperda (J. E. Smith), highly significant statistical differences were found among lines, based on the feeding responses of both species. In general, extracts from leaves elicited the most feeding from larvae of Spodoptera and the least from larvae of Heliothis. The reverse was the case for extracts from the kernels. Feeding response to extracts from silks was intermediate for both species.
