Response of corn (Zea mays L.) to population, bed height, and genotype on poorly drained sandy soil. 2. Top growth and root relationships

Response of corn (Zea mays L.) to population, bed height, and genotype on poorly drained sandy soil. 2. Top growth and root relationships

Agron. J 58(3): 299-302. Bibl. 24

2 maize hybrids were grown at 5 populations from 5000 to 25, 000 plants/ac and at bedding heights of 0, 3, 6 and 9 in. Plant population showed a positive curvilinear relationship with yield/ac, and a negative linear relationship with yield/plant. At 25, 000 plants/ac, yield/plant was 73% less, plant height 5% greater and lodging 17% more, than at 5000 plants/ac. Yields increased with increasing bed height in a wet year, but not in a dry one.
