Role of boiling water in iodophor-based milking machine cleaning systems

On 2 pairs of farms, milking machines either (i) difficult or (ii) easy to clean were treated with an iodophor pre-milking rinse followed by a cold water post-milking rinse, hot alkaline detergent and a final 'boiling' water rinse. After 12 wk, the final hot rinse was replaced by a cold water rinse on 1 (experimental) farm of each pair. Milk samples, collected twice weekly from each of the 4 farms, were examined bacteriolo-gically and detailed results are presented and discussed.
