In a controlled environment, salt stimulated the growth of Suaeda maximally at concentrations of 170 to 340 mM, and growth of Pisum was inhibited at 100 mM. Both species accumulated ions in their tops and the maximum concentrations of Na+ and C1+ were 860 mM and 730 mM in Suaeda and 170 mM and 300 mM in Pisum, respectively. Increasing salt concentrations markedly inhibited two dehydro-genases but had less effort on peroxidase and acid phosphatase in both species.
