Selection of suitable parents and combinations in breeding for scab resistance

Selection of suitable parents and combinations in breeding for scab resistance

Europ. Potato J 10: 286-95

About 100 potato seedlings from a number of crosses were grown in pots filled with compost mixed with an inoculum consisting of eight isolates of Streptomyces scabies, and the percentages of plants in each hybrid family falling into five infection classes were assessed visually. The degree of infection varied with year, but the ranking of the populations remained fairly constant. Crosses with a high proportion of seedlings having only slight infection often included Jubel in their ancestry.
