Sexual attraction in the free-living nematode Panagrellus silusiae (Cephalobidae)

Sexual attraction in the free-living nematode Panagrellus silusiae (Cephalobidae)

Canadian Journal of Zoology. 49: 11, 1443-1448

Female Panagrellus silusiae produce a substance that attracts males. Males do not produce attractant and there is no homosexual attraction. The attractant is water borne and forms a gradient in agar; it is first produced by females during the 4th juvenile stage and males first respond to the attractant at the same stage. Female Cephalobus persegnis also produce an attractant but both attract-ants are species-specific.
