Some Remarks On Cultures Of Dermatophytes On Hair-On-Soil Medium

Some Remarks On Cultures Of Dermatophytes On Hair-On-Soil Medium

Mycopathologia et Mycologia Applicata 24: 331-334

A layer of fungus mycelium on heavy agar substrate (2-3 mm), deposited on wet soil, was reached by the biochemical ingredients in the soil by diffusion through the agar layer. This fact was demonstrated and made visible by the use of 1% eosin solution. It was shown that keratinous material (hair) is not necessary in hair-on-soil cultures to induce production of perfect fruiting bodies; the soil alone is important. Hair-on-agar (Sabouraud glucose agar, Bacto Difco brand) did not induce production of perfect fruiting bodies.
