In field trials in 1965, rice was sown at 100, 150, 200 and 250 hills/m2 and received a basal dressing of 9.6 g N/m2 and top dressings of 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6 g N/m2. At each sowing density, number of spikelets per plant and 1000-grain weight increased with increase in level of top dressing.
