Studies of the combining ability of maize inbreds in relation to their position in the hybrid combination

Genetika i Selehtsiya, 4: 2, 71-82

A large collection of inbreds was studied in 1967-69 and data are given on the yields for 86 reciprocal single crosses and 18 reciprocal double crosses. Yield analyses showed that in some combinations certain inbreds had better combining ability when used as the maternal than as paternal parent for the production of single crosses or vice versa, while in other combinations the direction of the cross had little or no effect on the yield of the single cross.
