Abstract
(a) A group of normal and congenitally goitrous Merino sheep were investigated to identify the metabolic defect present in the abnormal animals. Average protein-bound I in serum of goitrous sheep was 5.7 micro g per 100 ml and in normal sheep 4.2 micro g but hormonal I, measured as 131I extractable in butanol, was low in serum of sheep with goitre, 40.3% of protein-bound 131I compared with 84.2%.
