Studies on bitter pit in apples. ID. The mineral content of the flesh and bitter pit incidence in the apple variety Belle de Boskoop

The flesh of fruit samples from 4 orchards was analysed over 2 years for Ca, Mg and K, and in one year also for N and P. The proportion of apples showing bitter pit ranged from 3 % to 75 % depending on source and season. High mean fruit Ca was found in samples showing low bitter pit incidence and vice versa. Variation coefficients were established for mineral content and ratios between the minerals in individual fruits.
