Studies on compression wood-Part I: Distribution of lignin in compression wood of Red Spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.)

Studies on compression wood-Part I: Distribution of lignin in compression wood of Red Spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.)

Holz Roh- u. Werkstoff. 24: 10, 432-8

Normal wood (a) and compression wood (b) were subjected to treatment with HF and to decay by Lenzites trabea and L. saepiaria, and the texture and distribution of the lignin remaining were studied by electron microscopy. In tracheids of (b) an isotropic layer with a high lignin concentration existed immediately inside S1, but this region also contained polysaccharides, probably oriented transversely to the fibre axis.
