The development of the root-surface mycoflora of seedlings of P. nigra var. laricio from Freshfield was studied, for different parts of the root system, in relation to seedling age. Ectotrophic BIOLOGY-ODC 11 441 mycorrhizas were not investigated. Fungi were isolated by the serial washing technique, and the roots were examined microscopically. Numbers of propagules of total colonies, sterile dark fungi and Penicillium spp. removed by washing are illustrated graphically.
